things to do in coastal north carolina

my devout readers know that i’m not a fan of coastal north carolina.
i am not running to the nearest ma & pa store off of 70 in search of shore décor.
i miss stopping by starbucks before taking the metra to ogilvie then rushing to catch a brown line to get to school on time.
i miss the hustle and bustle of city life and all that goes with it.

my seeester-in-law was in town for the weekend so it was a challenge to find things to do.
should i take her along on my near daily trips to the exciting walmart?
perhaps she’d rather take a drive out to harris teeter for organic produce?

after much brainstorming, j and i decided that we would be tourists for the weekend and do all the things that one can’t do back in the wonderful chi-town.

we toured the base and did a little shopping while j was at the rifle range.
after he came home we headed out to see the ocean. while atlantic beach wouldn’t have been crowded on the day we went, (it was in the low 70s, breezy and close to 5pm) we prefer to drive a little further to pine knoll shores. i’m not sure of the exact dates but i know that when it gets warmer they charge $10 for parking but we were able to park for free that day.

the beach was pretty empty so we had a lot of room to run and play!
beach 5
well they had a lot of room to run and play.
j was determined to get his sister into the chilly water. poor girl!
beach 6
he ended up just carrying her for a while.
beach 4
it was absolutely gorgeous out.
beach 3
j had a blast skipping rocks! he always tries to teach me but i just look dumb and never succeed.
beach 7
there are few things i like more than writing love letters in the sand.

the next day we headed into new bern.
it’s a town about 20-30 minutes to the west of us.

the bear is the town mascot and new bern is…THE BIRTHPLACE OF PEPSI!
omg. so exciting.
not really.
okay, kinda.
but i really love this picture because the bear’s tongue totally looks like leo’s!

we did all this touring on friday and saturday.
sunday we hung around the house and played munchkins…
never heard of it? super fun card game. most major bookstore have it in stock.

now it’s a chill and rainy monday.
our guest leaves tomorrow afternoon and i’m going to miss her dearly.
it’s been nice to have someone around. and i really enjoy intertaining.
leo is going to miss her like crazy too! he just loves having an extra set of hands in house that are available to rub his tummy!

what did you do this weekend?
any exploring?
hope your week is off to a great start!
xoxo

it is most certainly puppy love ❤ just be here with me.
signed: the moon. the stars. your still-hot-cup-of-coffee. your daughter. your son. your spouse. your heart. the green grass. the wild flowers. the waters you long to swim in. the color yellow. the color blue. your favorite poem. your favorite blanket. the wind in your hair. the waves on the ocean. the mountain air. your dad. your mom. the rain. the ice-cream cone. the butter sizzling with garlic in the frying pan. the grocery clerk with the sad, kind eyes. postcards waiting to be sent. the city squirrel. the county squirrel. jupiter. the photo album. your grandma's rosary. your favorite song. ink and paper. your best friend. the money in your wallet. the fork in your hand. brushes and paint. downward facing dog. the color turquoise. the almost invisible shade of pink. god. the skyline. the earth beneath your feet. a hammock. the shade of a giant tree. this moment, right here, now. your bones. your belly laugh. your breath. your breath. your breath. (quote from pinterest) a short list of things i love: america, cocktails, red lips, my chalkboard, grilled food but most importantly long weekends spent with my loved ones. happy birthday america! thanks for giving us the day off to celebrate 🍻
